What is MiniMax and how it can help you be more productive

MiniMax guide · Updated November 2026

MiniMax isn’t just the lab behind the Hailuo video generator anymore. What started in December 2021 as a Shanghai team of former SenseTime researchers has grown into one of China’s strongest open-weight challengers: a 428-billion-parameter multimodal flagship with a 1M-token context window, an agent platform priced an order of magnitude below US frontier labs, and – since its January 2026 Hong Kong IPO – a publicly listed one. In June 2026 the M3 model combined sparse attention with native image and video input, and on October 19, 2026 the M3.1 Flash halved the price again to become the default model inside MiniMax Code.

In this guide we explain what MiniMax is in 2026, how the M3, M3.1 Flash, M2, and M1 models fit together, what MiniMax Code, the mcode CLI, and Agent Teams can do, what the plans cost, and how to use it well – for coding, video, research, and everyday productivity.

01 · What it is

What is MiniMax?

MiniMax (MiniMax Group, Chinese: XiYu Technology) is a Shanghai-based AI company founded in December 2021 by Yan Junjie and former SenseTime computer-vision researchers, named after the minimax algorithm from game theory. It is one of China’s “AI Tigers”, raised a $600 million round led by Alibaba in March 2024, and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on January 9, 2026 – raising about $619 million, with shares roughly doubling on debut. Western audiences know it best for the Hailuo video generator and the Talkie character app; developers know it for the M-series models and one of the cheapest capable coding agents on the market.

The defining trait is the combination of multimodal products, open weights, and aggressive pricing. Most flagship models ship with downloadable weights you can self-host and fine-tune, the API speaks the Anthropic protocol so existing coding tools work unchanged, and the MiniMax Code desktop app plus the open-source mcode CLI turn the models into a full agent workspace. Note the licence before shipping anything: M3-family weights use the MiniMax Community License, not MIT or Apache 2.0.

Today, depending on the surface, MiniMax can:

  • Answer questions & explain concepts
  • Write, debug, test & ship code (MiniMax Code)
  • Reason with tunable thinking depth
  • Process 1M-token codebases & documents
  • Coordinate Agent Teams on long tasks
  • Build persistent Mini Apps
  • Generate 2K video with stereo sound
  • Narrate in 40 languages & clone voices
  • Compose full songs from lyrics
  • Self-host open weights on your own infra
MiniMax – the models

The M-series is a MoE lineage: M3 and M3.1 Flash run ~428B total parameters with ~23B active per token, sparse attention, and a 1M-token window with native image and video input. The M2 line (230B/10B) built the coding and agent reputation; M1 and MiniMax-01 pioneered the long context. Weights download from Hugging Face under the MiniMax Community License.

MiniMax Code – the agent

A desktop agent workspace plus the open-source mcode CLI, both on one M Plan subscription: Coding and Work modes, a built-in browser, Agent Teams, persistent project memory, scheduled tasks, remote control from your phone, and Mini Apps you describe in plain language. Around it: the Open Platform API, Hailuo / H3 video, Speech 2.8, Music 3.0, and Image-01.

02 · The model family

M3.1 Flash, M3, and the M-series line

MiniMax iterates fast, and retirement comes quickly: the M2.5 and M2.7 models closed to new users on October 19, 2026 and retire fully on November 18, 2026, with M Plan requests to those IDs auto-routing to M3.1 Flash. The current pairing is one flagship and one cheap workhorse.

MiniMax M3.1 Flash

The daily driver: ~3x faster inference and 70% lower task cost than M3, at $0.15/$0.60 per 1M tokens ($0.015 cached). Same 1M-token context, tunable thinking from low to max (default is max), built for agentic coding, tool use, computer use, and cybersecurity tasks. The default model in MiniMax Code and the CLI.

MiniMax M3

The architectural step: ~428B total / ~23B active across 256 experts, with MiniMax Sparse Attention on a grouped-query backbone – MiniMax says per-token compute at 1M context drops to roughly a twentieth of the previous generation, with ~9.7x faster prefill. First M-series model with native image and video input, plus computer use. Vendor-reported 59% on SWE-Bench Pro; open weights under the Community License.

MiniMax M2.7

The “self-evolving” generation: ~230B total / ~10B active, ~200K context. It ran 100+ autonomous rounds of scaffold optimization inside MiniMax’s own RL workflow – the model helped improve the harness that runs it – and introduced native Agent Teams with stable role identities and verifier agents. Weights reached Hugging Face in April.

MiniMax M2.5

The generation that made frontier-adjacent coding cheap: vendor-reported ~80.2% on SWE-Bench Verified – within about a point of Claude Opus at the time – at roughly a tenth of the cost, with a Lightning high-speed variant and a claim of about $1 per hour of continuous running. The moment “$0.30/$1.20 coding” became a real option.

The price disruptor · retiring

Behind the current pair sit M2.1 (December 2025, the multilingual-coding update for Rust, Java, Go, C++, and Kotlin), M2 (October 27, 2025 – the breakout 230B/10B agent model with interleaved thinking, around 69.4% on SWE-Bench Verified in early coverage), M1 (June 2025 – the first open-weight large-scale hybrid-attention reasoning model at 456B/45.9B with 1M context), MiniMax-01 (January 15, 2025 – Text-01 and VL-01, where the Lightning Attention long-context story started), and the abab series that goes back to 2022. Beyond text, the same platform ships Hailuo / H3 for video, Speech 2.8 for voice, Music 3.0 for songs, and Image-01 for pictures.

03 · How it works

How does MiniMax work?

MiniMax models are Mixture-of-Experts transformers: M3 activates only about 23 billion of its 428 billion parameters per token, which is how that size stays this cheap. The long-context story rests on two attention designs – Lightning Attention (linear-time attention on MiniMax-01 and M1) and MiniMax Sparse Attention on M3, where each query attends only to the most relevant key-value blocks, cutting 1M-context compute to roughly a twentieth of dense attention. Thinking is always on and tunable: M3.1 Flash runs low, medium, high, xhigh, or max effort.

A typical request flows through several stages:

  • 1

    Understand the request

Reads the prompt, conversation history, uploaded files, images, or video, plus connected MCP servers, skills, and persistent project memory.

  • 2

    Reason between tool calls

Interleaved thinking runs reasoning between tool invocations; on M3.1 Flash you tune the depth from low to max – and max costs several times more, so start low on routine edits.

  • 3

    Decide which tools to use

File edits, shell commands, tests, web search, browser preview, media generation, MCP servers – or splitting the work across an Agent Team with producer and verifier roles.

  • 4

Generate the response or take the action

The answer, the cited report, the slide deck, the 2K video clip with sound, or a finished multi-step coding task – sometimes after working independently for minutes or hours inside MiniMax Code.

  • 5

    Keep the session coherent

Context compaction, checkpoints, Plan mode, and persistent memory hold project conventions across sessions, so long repository work does not reset every chat.

04 · What you can do

What can you do with MiniMax?

Research and information

Web search grounds answers in current results, and MiniMax Code's Work mode runs multi-step research that ends in a cited report – MiniMax's own demos include TSMC revenue models and slide decks built from annual reports and earnings calls.

Writing and editing

Draft, rewrite, summarize, and translate with strong bilingual Chinese-English work. The desktop app's Work mode focuses on deliverables – documents, presentations, websites – rather than code.

Coding and DevOps

MiniMax Code plans, implements, tests, and reviews across a repository; the open-source mcode CLI runs the same agent in a terminal, headless in CI, or through editors via ACP. Vendor-reported M3 scores: 59% SWE-Bench Pro, 66% Terminal-Bench 2.1.

Long-document analysis

The original superpower since MiniMax-01. A 1M-token window holds an entire codebase, a book-length contract set, or hours of transcripts in a single prompt – with sparse attention keeping the cost sane.

Data analysis and Mini Apps

Upload spreadsheets for cleaning, metrics, and reports – and go further with Mini Apps: persistent little applications with their own frontend and backend, like stock dashboards or 3D viewers, that the agent builds and keeps running.

Video and multimodal input

Hailuo / H3 generates 2K video with native stereo sound in one pass (4–15 seconds) and accepts text, image, video, and audio references. M3 and M3.1 Flash read images and video natively, so you can prompt from a mockup or a screen recording.

Voice and music

Speech 2.8 narrates in 40 languages with HD and Turbo tiers and voice cloning from about 10 seconds of audio (use consented clones). Music 3.0's open weights generate complete five-minute songs from lyrics and a caption.

Integrations and self-hosting

The API speaks the Anthropic protocol, so Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, and Codex work unchanged at roughly a tenth of the price – or bring your own key to the mcode CLI. M-series weights download from Hugging Face under the MiniMax Community License.

05 · From chatbot to agent

The agentic shift: MiniMax Code and mcode

MiniMax’s biggest shift is not longer context – it is moving from “answer my question” to “finish this workflow.” MiniMax Code began as MiniMax Agent (June 2025), became a desktop app in early 2026, was renamed in May 2026, and rebuilt on the open-source Pi Agent framework in August. Today it is two products on one subscription: a closed desktop app and an open-source terminal CLI.

01

mcode CLI – open source

Terminal coding agent, open-sourced September 18, 2026 under MIT for first-party code. Interactive TUI, headless mcode exec with JSON output and exit codes for scripts and CI, Agent Client Protocol for editors, and a TypeScript SDK. BYOD: point it at any OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible provider and keep your existing billing.

MIT · TUI + headless + ACP · BYOK

02

Desktop app – the workspace

macOS and Windows. Coding mode keeps project and terminal context; Work mode focuses on deliverables. Built-in browser for previews and debugging, Agent Team decomposition with verifier agents, persistent project memory, scheduled tasks, remote control from your phone, and Mini Apps – persistent little applications with their own frontend and backend that the agent builds from a plain-language description.

Agent Teams · Mini Apps · Remote Control · memory

03

API and third-party tools

The API speaks the Anthropic protocol, so Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Kilo Code, and Codex work unchanged – just repoint the base URL. Developers report cutting coding-agent bills roughly in half this way, and the M Plan includes a Subscription Key for exactly this. Open weights cover the self-hosting route when data cannot leave your infrastructure.

Anthropic-compatible · Claude Code · Cursor · Cline

An independent October 2026 harness comparison (Anchor Terminal) scored MiniMax Code 66.1 on agent readiness – ahead of Claude Code (53.6) and Gemini CLI (64.8), behind OpenCode (68.8) and Qwen Code (68.7). The strategy is the usual MiniMax play: capable enough harness, open enough code, priced so sustained agent runs stay affordable.

07 · Staying productive

How to use MiniMax well

Give it everything once

With a 1M-token window, attach the whole repository or the full document set instead of summarizing. For recurring work, put conventions in AGENTS.md and skills once – not in every prompt.

Start thinking at low effort

M3.1 Flash defaults to max thinking, which can cost several times more on the same task. Run routine edits at low and escalate only when a fix fails.

Match the surface to the job

Plan mode for multi-file work, headless mcode exec for CI, the desktop app for deliverables and Agent Teams, and the plain API – or your existing Claude Code setup – for everything in between.

The prompt pattern that works

Role:You are a senior engineer working in this repository.Task:Find the failing test, fix the implementation, and run the relevant tests. Do not change the public API.Format:A short plan first, then the changes as bullets with file:line references, and the test output at the end.

Context, task, format – with a 1M-token window, hand MiniMax Code the whole repo. Keep effort at low until a fix fails, and verify vendor benchmark claims on your own codebase rather than trusting the marketing table.

08 · The window

How large is the context window?

M3 and M3.1 Flash carry a 1,000,000-token context window – roughly 750,000 words – with output up to 512K tokens. The M2 line tops out around 205,000 tokens, while M1 and MiniMax-01 were trained at 1M and extrapolate to 4M tokens at inference. Sparse and lightning attention are what keep those windows affordable to run.

MiniMax M3 / M3.1 Flash – 1,000,000 tokens≈ 750,000 words
M1 / MiniMax-01 – 1,000,000 trained (4,000,000 inferred)≈ 3,000,000 words at max
M2 / M2.1 / M2.5 / M2.7 – 205,000 tokens≈ 154,000 words
abab6.5 (2024) – 200,000 tokens≈ 150,000 words

Practical rule of thumb: a token is roughly 0.75 English words, and about 1.5 tokens per word once you factor in punctuation and spacing. Thinking, Agent Teams, and tool output all consume part of the window, and attention is not perfectly uniform across it – expect some “lost in the middle” degradation on very long documents.

09 · Plans and pricing

M Plan annual billing counts 10 months for 12, and quotas run on 5-hour rolling plus weekly windows without carry-over. Explore and Build include H3 video; Go does not. Token prices are not task prices: measure cost per completed task, since a long agent run can burn far more tokens than a chat turn. 10 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MiniMax open source?

Partly. The mcode CLI is open source under MIT for first-party code (September 2026), but the desktop app is closed. The models are open weights, not open source: M3, M3.1 Flash, H3, and Music 3.0 ship under the MiniMax Community License, while the older M1 is Apache 2.0 and M2 uses a modified MIT listing.

What does the MiniMax Community License require?

The base grant covers non-commercial use. Commercial use requires prominent “Built with MiniMax M3” attribution; products above $20 million in yearly revenue need separate prior written authorization from MiniMax, and there is a banned-use list. Read the LICENSE file in the Hugging Face repo before shipping anything.

How is MiniMax different from DeepSeek, Kimi, or Mistral?

DeepSeek also does cheap open weights, but MiniMax’s identity is multimodal (video, voice, and music from one lab) plus the MiniMax Code agent platform. Kimi leans on long context and agent swarms; Mistral leans on European data residency; MiniMax leans on price, open weights, and consumer reach through Talkie and Hailuo. Against ChatGPT or Claude, MiniMax is the build-it-yourself, cheaper option.

Can I use MiniMax in English?

Yes. The models are strong in both Chinese and English with solid bilingual translation, the CLI and desktop app work in English, and Speech 2.8 covers 40 languages. The global region login (mcode login --region global) routes you to the international endpoint.

What are MiniMax’s risks and caveats?

Headline benchmarks are vendor-reported: independent Artificial Analysis scores put M3.1 Flash at 42–43 on its intelligence index – a jump over M3’s 29, but behind DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Gemini 4 Argon. Hallucination is a real weakness: on independent factuality testing, Flash answered 56% correctly but almost never abstained – 93% of its misses were confident wrong answers. There are also legal allegations (a September 2025 copyright suit from Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. over Hailuo; a denied 2026 distillation claim from Anthropic), and model churn is fast – M2.5 and M2.7 retire within weeks of M3.1 Flash’s launch.

Can I self-host the models?

Yes, with caveats. Weights for M3, M3.1 Flash, H3, and Music 3.0 are on Hugging Face and ModelScope, but M3.1 Flash is a ~428B-parameter MoE – the 23B active per token does not mean a 23B download. Realistic self-hosting needs multi-GPU hardware (hundreds of gigabytes), community licence compliance, and an inference stack like vLLM or SGLang. For sensitive code, that route keeps data on your own infrastructure entirely.

Heads-up:MiniMax moves unusually fast: models retire within weeks, the agent app was renamed twice in a year, and pricing was reshaped in September 2026. The details above reflect early November 2026 (M3.1 Flash GA Oct 19; M2.5/M2.7 retire Nov 18) – check platform.minimax.io and the Hugging Face model cards for current availability, licences, and limits.
