What is Meta AI and how it can help you be more productive
Meta AI isn’t just a chat bubble inside your social feed anymore. Since July 2026 the free assistant runs on Meta’s own Muse Spark models, and the bigger story is Muse: the personal AI agent Meta launched on September 8, 2026, which plans multi-step work in its own cloud computer, connects to your email, calendar, and shopping, and keeps going after you close the app. A month later the Muse Wonder and Wonder Full models pushed the family to the frontier with Active Memory, Active Focus, and frontier-level coding.
In this guide we explain what Meta AI is in 2026, how the Muse Spark, Wonder, and Wonder Full models fit together, what the Muse agent, Muse Code, and the Secure VM can do, what the plans cost, and how to use it well – for research, errands, coding, and everyday productivity.
What is Meta AI?
Meta AI is the assistant Meta builds into the apps people already use: free at meta.ai, in the dedicated mobile and Mac apps, and inside WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Since July 9, 2026 it runs on Muse Spark 1.1 – models produced by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the AI division Meta created in June 2025 under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang after the $14.3 billion deal that brought in a 49 percent stake in Scale AI. Meta pitches the ambition behind it as “personal superintelligence”: AI that helps individuals reach their own goals instead of only answering questions.
Muse is the second surface, and the more consequential one. Launched on September 8, 2026 in the US on iOS, Android, the web at muse.ai, and inside WhatsApp, it is a standalone personal agent: you give it a goal, it builds a plan and carries the work out itself. Every user gets a Muse Secure VM – a dedicated Linux virtual machine with its own browser where the agent works – and it keeps running in the background even after you close the app, checking in when it needs a decision. By Meta’s October 21 earnings call, Muse had 10 million users across the US and Canada and had topped the US App Store free chart.
Today, depending on the surface, Meta’s stack can:
- Answer questions & explain concepts
- Write, rewrite, summarize & translate
- Search the live web with citations
- Plan & execute multi-step goals
- Browse sites & fill forms in its own browser
- Manage email & calendar with your approval
- Check out online with one-time cards
- Remember projects & preferences across chats
- Write, debug & ship code (Muse Code)
- Generate images & video
- Run local agents on open weights (Glimmer)
Muse Spark, Muse Wonder, and the open-weight side
“Muse” is the umbrella for Meta’s post-Llama generation. The Spark models power everything today, the Wonder pair brought the family to the frontier on October 12, 2026, and two open-weight releases serve builders who want the models on their own hardware. Meta says the frontier pair was trained at its gigawatt-scale Prometheus data center.
Around the core family sit the specialists: Muse Image and Muse Video for generation, a Realtime Avatar model that drives video conversations with a visual representation of the agent, and Muse Charm – a palm-sized companion device for using the agent away from your phone, shown at Meta Connect on September 23, 2026. Wonder is closed and paid; Meta says its weights will stay proprietary, in deliberate contrast to the Spark Open release.
How does Muse work?
An agent has to do things, not just say things. Muse wraps its models in a working environment and a safety architecture: every user gets an isolated cloud computer, and a separate guard process controls everything that leaves it. The same Spark models answer in Meta AI, but only the agent surface gets the Secure VM, connectors, and approval flow. A goal moves through several stages:
- 1
Take the goal
You describe an outcome – “plan my trip to Lisbon next month under $1,200 and hold the options” – and Muse builds an action plan, tracks progress, and proactively completes the steps along the way.
- 2
Work in the Secure VM
A dedicated Linux virtual machine with its own browser executes the steps. Sub-agents run parts of the task in parallel, you can watch the browser and intervene at any time, and the work continues after you close the app.
- 3
Reach your connected services
Connectors grant read and write access per service – Gmail, Google Calendar, Instagram, Spotify, OpenTable, Ticketmaster, Plaid, Link by Stripe, plus custom connectors for anything else. Credentials sit in a store the agent itself cannot read.
- 4
Pass the Sentinel gate
A separate agent allows, blocks, or escalates everything Muse sends to the internet. Emails and purchases need your sign-off; lower-risk steps you have already authorized proceed on their own.
- 5
Report back and remember
Muse returns with results, options, or questions, keeps a full activity log you can review, and retains context across sessions – with Wonder’s Active Memory carrying your project details forward so you stop re-explaining them.
One design decision deserves attention: Meta deliberately does not ask permission for every small step, because people who are asked constantly start approving on reflex, which defeats the point. Sensitive actions still require sign-off, and everything lands in the audit trail – so watch the visible browser and the activity log closely during your first weeks, when you are still calibrating how much to delegate.
What can you do with Meta AI?
The agentic shift: Meta AI, Muse, and Muse Code
Meta now sells one intelligence across three surfaces, and picking the right one for the job is most of the productivity win. The assistant answers; the agent acts; the developer tools build on the same models.
The strategy reads like the rest of the industry turned up a notch: consumer reach through WhatsApp and Instagram, a developer wedge through the API and the coding agent, and enterprise as the next frontier – with Meta betting that an agent with its own computer beats a chatbot with more parameters.
The Muse timeline: 2025–2026
Meta Superintelligence Labs is created under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, alongside the $14.3 billion investment that brings a 49 percent stake in Scale AI.
Muse Spark, the first model in the Muse family, ships – built for multimodal reasoning, coding, and real-world agentic work with a 1M-token context window.
Muse Spark 1.1 takes over Meta AI at meta.ai and inside WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, replacing the Llama-era assistant.
The Muse personal agent launches in the US on iOS, Android, the web, and WhatsApp, with the Muse Secure VM, Sentinel approvals, and launch partners including Stripe, Shopify, Walmart, Expedia, and Instacart. Muse Code ships for developers.
Muse reaches Canada and tops the US App Store free chart; Amazon blocks the agent from its retail site, arguing it did not identify itself while browsing.
Meta Connect shows Muse Charm, a palm-sized companion device for the agent, and smart-glasses support is confirmed as coming.
The Meta Enterprise Platform is announced under Chirantan “CJ” Desai; Muse for Small Business launches with QuickBooks, Shopify, Slack, Asana, and Meta ad-account connectors.
Muse Wonder and Wonder Full arrive as Meta’s first frontier models, with Active Memory, Active Focus, and expert-domain strength – trained at the gigawatt-scale Prometheus data center.
Muse Spark Open ships with open weights: an 816-billion-parameter MoE with 42 billion active parameters, optimized in part for Apple’s M5 Ultra chips.
Meta’s Q3 earnings call: 10 million Muse users across the US and Canada, and Zuckerberg calling Muse Wonder “our first frontier model” on the way to personal superintelligence.
How to use Meta AI and Muse well
The prompt pattern that works
Goal, constraints, permissions – that is the Muse delegation pattern. Keep sensitive sends behind approval until you have watched a few runs in the activity log; then widen the scope to the repetitive work you actually dread.
How large is the context window?
Both Wonder models and the Spark generation carry a 1,000,000-token context window – roughly 750,000 words – enough to hold whole codebases, book-length contracts, or an entire project history in a single session. The difference between them is not the window but what happens inside it: Wonder’s Active Memory keeps the relevant parts available across tasks and conversations.
Muse Glimmer trades window size for hardware reach – it targets 24 GB consumer GPUs, where a compact 30B model necessarily holds less context than the cloud flagships. Practical rule of thumb: a token is roughly 0.75 English words, and about 1.5 tokens per word once you factor in punctuation and spacing. As with any million-token model, attention is not perfectly uniform across the full window – expect some “lost in the middle” degradation on very long documents.
